Western White Pine
Western White Pine
Bundle of 100 trees
Description
Pinus monticola is a beautiful evergreen conifer that can grow up to 130 feet in height. The needles are a light bluish-green in color and in bundles 5. The pollen cones of the tree are yellow, and the seed cones are reddish brown when mature, having a banana shape to them.
Habitat
Can grow in moist valleys to dry slopes, from near sea level to subalpine areas. Requires full sun, but can thrive on both dry as well as moist sites.
Beneficial Uses
The bark of the pine has been used to make baskets and canoes as well as medicinal purposes by Indigenous people. It is also a valued timber tree used, commonly used for window and door frames. The seeds of the trees are eaten by many birds such as crossbills, grosbeaks, nuthatches, Clark’s Nutcracker, chickadees, jays, and woodpeckers. The seeds are also a food source for small mammals like squirrels and chipmunks. Foliage is eaten by deer and grouse, and rodents eat the bark and wood. The tree also provides good nesting and roosting habitat and cover for animals.
