Rhododendron macrophyllum

Description

The Pacific rhododendron is well known for being the state flower of Washington. Its leaves are alternate, evergreen, thick, leathery, and not hairy. Leaves can be 3-8 inches long. Flowers are pink to rose-purple, bell-shaped, 5-lobed. Can be between 7-30 ft tall. Fruits are woody capsules.

Habitat

Moist to dry coniferous or mixed forests. Can be found on the coasts to middle elevations in the mountains. They form extensive shrub layer in forests. Also can be found growing along roadsides and forest edges. Favors moist, acidic soil and partial to full shade.

Beneficial Uses

Produces a beautiful flower display in the spring. Can be useful for erosion control on steep watersheds. This shrub provides all year cover for wildlife such as birds.
